freetalk for 1.28.08: Mitsuru and his mother take it upon themselves to contact everyone invited to the wedding and tell them that it's off. It's customary at Japanese weddings to give the guests gifts, and I've heard that if it gets canceled, then they still get something for their troubles. Mrs. Shimura tries to console her son the best she can, but we can see he's still visibly down . . . . will he ever pull out of this funk? (Oh, and the words on his shirt are a reference to a Toad the Wet Sprocket song that I've had stuck in my head all night!)
